Local park user finding glass at Saratoga Park

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Dogs often get their exercise, mental stimulation and socialization at local dog parks.

But one park user has found that instead of running on the usual snow or grass, her dog is running on glass.

Park user Amanda Tsui says the amount of glass on the east side of Saratoga Dog Park is concerning.

“It’s definitely a hazard for the glass to be here. I’m aware the park is a user beware facility, but having the hazard of glass isn’t something I would anticipate when I come to a dog park. Hazards are mainly other park dogs, maybe some sharp sticks or rocks, but the volume of glass we encounter is definitely a red flag,” said Tsui.

After four years of visiting the park off and on, this is the first time she’s noticed glass.

“I only noticed it when we had one of those false spring moments, and it exposed more of the mulch and the glass here last week,” she said.

Through the melted snow, Tsui and other park users also began finding glass and porcelain cups by the handfuls. Tsui reported the problem to the city and it’s still under investigation.

She says removing the glass will require a communal effort, not a quick fix. This is because the glass is located in the deeper layers of the soil.

“Volunteers just picking the glass is not going to be the most efficient or effective solution. It’s going to require a collaboration between citizens and also city resources,” said Tsui.

Tsui said that she enjoys taking her Irish Doodle to Saratoga Park, but won’t do it again until the glass issue is addressed.

She believes the glass will never fully be eliminated, but the amount could be reduced.

CHAT News Today also reached out to the City of Medicine Hat for a comment on the glass found at the dog park, but they did not respond.
