Design students in Medicine Hat and China exchange art

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The opportunity exists in Medicine Hat right now for you to see how different art is from our city, compared to works created in China.

Design students from Medicine Hat College and China’s Xiamen University have exchanged art, in what’s called a Fusion show.

Second-year design students from Medicine Hat and China have collaborated on this project since January.

Yulin Wang, the Arts and Design Instructor from Medicine Hat College, had asked friends from Xiamen University to collaborate on the art project.

He says the university was extremely excited at the idea.

Currently, forty-four pieces of art are on display at Medicine Hat College’s Cultural Centre.
The students were told to find inspiration from the word “fusion.”

Wang says the project is to generate discussion and an understanding of graphic design from different countries and social perspectives.

“Of course it’s different. Because it’s from the culture here. Even though it’s a similar subject, they interpret it in different ways and different perspectives, which is amazing to compare,” said Wang.

The public is welcome to see Fusion during gallery hours or at tonight’s program, which starts at 7 p.m. The event starts with speeches from the universities’ deans and students of China and Medicine Hat.
