Fabric, Yarn and More Sale helps locally and internationally

MEDICINE HAT, AB – St. John’s Presbyterian Church was a hive of activity Friday as members of Hat Grannies for Africa stocked the tables for the Fabric, Yarn and More Sale.

The sale on Saturday will support people in our community and grandmothers on the other side of the world.

Fabric sale coordinator Joanie Gilchrist says she thinks of the Fabric, Yarn and More Sale as a big circle of help.

‘We’re helping the grandmothers in Africa, we’re helping our community,” she says. “I’m very proud of all of the networks that we have made in our community and provincially because our fabrics, what’s purchased in our sale goes to make quilts for Quilts of Valour, Ronald McDonald House, the Preganancy Support Network; the knitting goes to Mustard Seed. That all stays locally. But the money that’s actually raised at the fabric sale is what goes to the Hat Grannies for Africa. So we’re helping locally and we’re helping internationally.”

Hat Grannies for Africa is part of the Grandmothers Campaign under the umbrella of the Stephen Lewis Foundation, and helps grandmothers raising their children and grandchildren in sub-Saharan Africa

Since its first donation in 2009, Hat Grannies has donated more than $75,000 and the group hopes to raise a record high of $10,000 this year.

To keep things moving they’ve spread 192 boxes worth of sale items out into a second room at the church to improve traffic flow. That’s especially important in the early going, Gilchrist says.

“In 2019 we had 100 people come in the door in the first 10 minutes. It’s barely organized chaos at the very beginning so we’re hoping that being able to spread out a little bit will help that,” she explains.

The sale takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday with everything reduced to half price for the final hour.
