LETHBRIDGE, AB – The top baby names in Alberta for 2022 have been unveiled.

Olivia is the most popular name for baby girls born in Alberta last year. The name has held the top spot since 2013. Meanwhile, Noah is the most popular name for boys for the fourth straight year.

Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction, Dale Nally said, “Congratulations to everyone who brought a child into this world in 2022.”

Nally continued, “Alberta is a great place to live, and I see a positive future for all parents choosing to raise a family here. To those expecting a baby in 2023, or to those who are just plain curious, I encourage you to check out the baby names lists from years past.”

Some other names moved up and down the list in 2022.

The province said the names Sophia, Emma, Amelia, and Harper rounded out the top five for girls’ names. Harper saw a jump up six spots after placing 11th the previous year. The name Lily moved up eight spots to get back into the top 10 after missing out in 2021.

For boys, the names Liam, Theodore, Oliver, and Jack landed in the top five spots along with Noah. Following a three-year absence, the name James returned to the top 10, as did the name Lucas.

In all, there were 48,225 births registered in Alberta in 2022. Of these new arrivals, 24,781 were boys and 23,437 were girls, according to the province. Officials note that in seven births, the sex of the baby was not indicated at the time of the initial registration.

There were 12,966 different names registered for babies in 2022. Parents in Alberta have one year to register the birth of their child. The province noted that because of this, the 2022 baby names and birth statistics lists might change slightly.

Lists of the top baby names in Alberta for 2022, as well as years past, are available at the provincial government website.
