New COVID-19 cases, inpatients continue to decrease

The number of weekly new COVID-19 cases in Alberta continues to drop in the province’s latest update released Wednesday.

As of Jan. 30, there are 702 Albertans currently hospitalized with COVID-19, and 25 of those people are in ICU. Last week there were 778 in hospital and 29 in ICU.

There were 596 new cases over the most recent seven-day period, compared to 648 last week.

There have been 5,486 COVID deaths recorded in Alberta over the course of the pandemic, 21 new this week.

The province’s COVID-19 dashboard is now showing only zone statistics instead of by municipality. There were 41 new cases in the South Zone in the update.

The seven-day new case rate in the zone of 12.5 new cases per 100,000 people is lower than the provincial average of 13.5.

There have been 40,954 total COVID-19 cases in the zone since the start of the pandemic, and 513 deaths, four new in this update.

Vaccination statistics for Medicine Hat show 79.4 per cent of all people have received one dose, 76 per cent have received two doses and 38.7 per cent have received three doses.
