Icy roads, dual weather alerts to start the week

Jan 16, 2023 | 11:18 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – City police are asking drivers to use extra caution on the roads today as Medicine Hat and the surrounding area are under a pair of weather alerts.

A freezing rain warning and fog advisory are in effect for Medicine Hat-Bow Island-Suffield and Cypress Hills Provincial Park-Foremost.

“Please slow down and allow extra room for stopping. Stay safe!,” say police.

Patchy freezing rain warning will end by early this afternoon, says Environment and Climate Change Canada. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas.

As well, dense fog patches giving very low visibility will continue today. The fog may lift through the day in some areas but will likely return tonight, according to the national weather service.

It adds freezing drizzle is possible in these areas leading to slippery conditions and fog patches will persist until Tuesday.

Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero. Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.
