Program to help Hatters who want to quit smoking

Jan 14, 2023 | 12:40 AM

Medicine Hat, AB–Alberta Health Services (AHS) is offering support to Hatters looking to quit smoking.

QuitCore is a free Alberta Health Services (AHS) group support program that provides Albertans 18 and over with the tools and skills they need to quit using tobacco.

The program is led by trained cessation professionals. Tobacco users are taught how to develop a plan to quit. It also offers strategies to address recovery symptoms, manage stress and, ultimately, prevent relapse. The workshops are also useful for individuals who vape. The program also connects participants with others trying to quit.

QuitCore will be held from 6 – 7:30 p.m. on six consecutive Tuesdays starting Jan. 17 at Community Health Services, 2948 Dunmore Rd. S.E.

Call 1-866-710-QUIT (7848) to register for the session. More information is also available at www.albertaquits.ca

Tobacco is the leading preventable cause of disease, disability, and premature death in Alberta, causing more than 3,000 deaths each year across the province. Many more Albertans have tobacco-related illnesses.

AHS offers various programs and services to help Albertans quit tobacco, including telephone and online support services, one-on-one counselling and group cessation programs, such as QuitCore, which launched in 2008. The program is now available in more than 20 communities across the province.
