Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub receiving more emergency calls for food donations

MEDICINE HAT, AB – It’s just the start of 2023 but already the Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub is seeing an increase in the number of families needing assistance this month.

Executive director Melissa Mullis from The Root Cellar and Wellness Hub says the food bank is in need of more food and cash donations to help support the increased demand.

“Typically, January is one of our busiest months. We are seeing an increase in the number of emergency calls that are coming in,” said Mullis.

With food prices remaining high due to inflation, she says it’s driving more people to access the food bank than ever seen before.

“Because of the crisis we’re dealing with in our province and our community, the numbers are historically higher than they have been previously in this month,” she said.

“People in our community and in Alberta are in crisis right now, so we’re dealing with more families having to choose between paying their utilities bill, paying for high cost of fuel and high cost of food,” the director said.

Canada’s Food Price Report projects food prices for 2023 to remain high and to increase by five to seven per cent. The report says food inputs, like fuels, chemicals and fertilizers, climate change and transportation will drive pricing.

As outlined in the food report, the projected figure is only an estimate since last year’s events make it more difficult to predict.

“We want to make sure the community knows that we’re here, and that the Government of Alberta has put some supports for individuals, families and seniors. We’re really hoping that those supports are going to make sure that people are able to get the basic rewards that they need,” said Mullis.

To help keep the shelves stocked, Mullis says they can always use cash donations or staple food like peanut butter, tuna, soups, and cereals.
