Prairie Rose board chair Cathy Hogg seeking NDP nomination in Cypress-Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT, AB – After serving for 10 years as a trustee for Prairie Rose Public Schools, Cathy Hogg wants to give provincial politics a shot.

Currently the chair of the rural school board, Hogg gave notice on Tuesday that she would take a leave from the board for at least six months to run for the NDP nomination in Cypress-Medicine Hat.

She’s lived and worked in the region for more than 40 years and feels she knows both the rural and the urban parts of this constituency well.

Hogg says improved health care, agriculture support and attracting business are top of mind for her, and what she hears from people in the area.

“I’d want to advocate for more industry in Medicine Hat. You know we’re sitting in a pretty sweet spot right on the number 1 with corridors to the south as well, she says.

“And I think it’s wonderful that we have the seniors community and that they want to spend their golden years here, I’d like to see our grandkids want to stay here too so maybe expanding some opportunities at the college.”

Hogg is in her second year as chair and previously served as president of Alberta School Board Association, which she says gave her a lot of experience speaking with MLA in the provincial legislature.

Tim Gruber has also announced his intention to run for the NDP nomination in the riding. The party has not set a nomination date.

The provincial election is scheduled for May 2023.
