Aladdin Jr. a rare show for Crescent Heights High School

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Crescent Heights High School drama students will transport the audience to Agrabah this week, presenting the musical Aladdin Jr. for eight shows from Wednesday to Saturday.

It’s a rare occurrence that the school stages a junior musical, but there’s a good reason it’s happening this year. Director and school drama teacher Jennifer Davies says she was inspired after working with the juniors during last year’s SpongeBob show.

“The only reason we are doing it is that the collection of students in Grade 7, 8 and 9 are so phenomenal to work with,” she says. “They were such great workers, they were fun, they were perfect for a Disney show. And so we went out of our way to do a second musical that we don’t normally do. We’ll still have our show in February, but this one is just for the juniors because they deserved it.”

This is only the second time Crescent Heights has staged a junior musical.

Davies says Aladdin Jr. follows the basic story of the famous Disney cartoon but is condensed to an hour-long show leaving only the best in terms of singing and dancing. She adds the show is a spectacle filled with beautiful colours and sounds and amazing dance numbers and projections.

She says there are 55 junior students among the cast and crew and senior students in the drama program have been instrumental with set-making, prop-making and at rehearsals.

Shows run at 5 and 7 p.m. Wednesday to Friday and at 2 and 5 p.m. on Saturday.
