Premier to update Highway 3 twinning today

Nov 25, 2022 | 9:39 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Premier Danielle Smith will be in Medicine Hat today for an update on the twinning of Highway 3.

Smith often talked about the twinning of Highway 3 during the Brooks-Medicine Hat byelection campaign she won on Nov. 8. The day after the vote, Smith said it was her role as the local MLA to identify and elevate issues impacting residents in the riding, including the twinning of Highway 3. At the time Smith said she hoped to make an announcement on some of those issues soon.

For more than two decades the Highway 3 Twinning Development Association has been pushing for the twinning of the popular highway. In February the group’s priority list had the 26-kilometre stretch from Medicine Hat to Seven Persons at the top.

In July 2020, the province announced funding to twin Highway 3 from Taber to Burdett, a 46-kilometre section of roadway and a main priority for the association. In May, Victoria Chester, the director of advancement with the association, says the province has been assembling the land needed for that section of twinning.

Smith will be joined by Devin Dreeshen, minister of transportation and economic corridors, for the 1 p.m. announcement.
