City returning to Saamis Rotary Park for work on abandoned gas well

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Work will resume Monday on an abandoned gas well in Saamis Rotary Park along Sierra Boulevard SW.

The City of Medicine Hat says that earlier this year attempts to service the well with smaller, less-intrusive equipment like coil tubing and wireline units were exhausted. A service rig is now required to complete a non-typical sweet shallow gas downhole abandonment.

“We typically schedule this type of work in the winter when the parks have less visitors and activities,” said Ken Wright, supervisor of Gas Production Completions and Abandonment. “These are industrial operations with heavy machinery and public safety is paramount. If we can minimize the number of people around when this large equipment is on-site, we all feel more comfortable.”

Those in the area will see this large equipment in Saamis Rotary Park starting Monday and will notice a temporary increase in noise during the day. This operation is expected to take five or more days, according to the city. Residents have been notified with hand-delivered letters.

The city says the work presents no anticipated danger to residents aside from proximity to heavy equipment. Temporary fencing will be erected around the worksite with security on site. The public is asked to observe a safe distance from the worksite and obey all signage, barriers and personnel.

Parking, roadway and trail restrictions may occur for short durations in order for the equipment to access and manoeuvre around the park areas.
