MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Esplanade stage will transform into the Esplanade sea this week when Medicine Hat Firehall Theatre presents the classic story of The Little Mermaid with four shows between today and Saturday.

Ariel, Sebastian, Flounder and all the other characters from the fairy tale will sing and dance their way through the beloved songs, helping Ariel find love and life with Prince Eric.

Board member Luanne Schneider says there are plenty of highlights for the audience.

“They are going to see a fantastic orchestra, it’s live. We’re going to see actors and actresses that are all local people here that are so talented,” she says. “Medicine Hat is blessed with talented people and they’re going to see really interesting ideas and extravagant costumes and sets that were all handmade here in Medicine Hat.”

This is Firehall Theatre’s first production since Happy Days in 2018 and features a cast and crew of about 60.

Schneider says The Little Mermaid is a lighthearted and whimsical show and a perfect way for Firehall to return to the stage. The group struggled with financial concerns over the past two years but Schneider says Firehall is back on its feet and here to stay after deciding to return to its roots.

“We just decided to sell our building to eliminate any more expenses and go back to the community where are actually arose from,” she says.

She adds the entire theatre community in Medicine Hat appreciates the support from their audiences.

“These are phenomenal people and if you want to see talent in Medicine Hat, start going to your school productions because this is where these people are coming from.”

Shows run Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and there is a matinee Saturday at 2 p.m.
