City says Southridge Pond ice not thick enough yet

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The City of Medicine Hat is reminding people it’s better safe than sorry when it comes to ice thickness.

“We know you all want to get out and start enjoying some outdoor winter recreation, but now is not the time to be on bodies of water,” states a Facebook post by the city.

According to the city, the ice thickness at the Southridge Pond is currently only three inches, which does not meet the recommended thickness for activities on the pond.

City staff have noticed areas on the pond that have been cleared, indicating people were on the ice.

“We’re thankful that those folks appear to have made it off the pond safely, but we ask everyone to please stay off the pond until the ice is shown to be at least six inches deep, the post continues.

The city says staff check ice depth regularly and will move the arrow on the sign when it meets minimum standards.
