Nov 10, 2022 | 9:34 AM

Medicine Hat, AB–For many a pet is an important member of the family.

Concerns about a pet’s wellbeing and safety can often be a barrier when it comes to leaving a domestic violence situation.

On Sunday, The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society and the Medicine Hat SPCA are encouraging the public to dress themselves and their pets in purple for the eighth annual family pet walk.

The walk is being held at Kin Coulee Park beginning at the Toboggan hill at 1p.m..

Donations towards the Medicine Hat SPCA will be collected. “Our Pet Safekeeping Program with the SPCA is vital, as it provides those coming into shelter, a safe place for their pets to stay during their stay with us, ” says Natasha Carvalho with the Women’s Shelter.

Tom Carney, the Shelter Director of the SPCA says “we’re proud of the partnership we’ve built with the Women’s Shelter that helps us build a safer community for all.”

According to a 2012 Alberta SPCA survey, 59% of abused women with animals delayed leaving out of concern for their animal.

The same survey found that 36% of abused women with animals reported their abuser threatened or harmed their animals and 85% of those threats were carried out.
