Grasslands Public Schools District cancels all rural routes

Nov 7, 2022 | 6:04 PM

Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for parts of Southern Alberta last night.

And with road conditions, and visibility being poor, Grasslands Public Schools in Brooks, Alberta, had to cancel all of their rural bus routes today.

“We just thought it was safer, not to have busloads of kids on the road,” says the Associate Superintendent of Business Services for Grasslands Public Schools.

Routes in the city of Brooks were still running.

Schroeder adds there is a plan in place if situations like these occur while students are in school . . .

“Parents either come and pick their kids up from school, or students were directed to stay with their emergency billet, um we collect that information at registration, for all of our rural kids”

Schroeder mentions that things are expected to get back to normal for the Grasslands bus service by tomorrow . . .

“It is supposed to stop snowing later today, so I’m thinking tomorrow we’ll be back on track, you know they should be out clearing snow overnight, um so there may be some delays on some routes tomorrow, but everything should be running.”

Shroeder adds that students can avoid standing in the cold while waiting for their bus to arrive, by checking the Grasslands Public Schools website and social media accounts, as route timings are updated daily.
