Medicine Hat and area tackling the fallout of first snowstorm of the season

Nov 3, 2022 | 5:04 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat and area saw 17 centimetres of snow, followed by slick conditions Wednesday evening and Thursday morning following the first snowstorm of the winter season.

Crews have been working day and night to try and get the snowfall under control. The city has different roads and pathways broken up into three categories that allow them to put their focus on the high-need areas before those with lower traffic.

Category one includes the highway along with a focus on the steep hills, Category two is school zones and city bus routes and the third is residential roadways.

Throughout the early afternoon Thursday, workers were still focused on traction control in the category one areas but had begun to tackle some of the category two defined places.

Operations superintendant Trevor Funk says the city was prepared prior to the storm, having kept a close eye on the expected weather in the hours before it hit.

We were definitely ready for the event, watching the weather always anticipating what’s coming” he said. “We had staff out all throughout the day mainly focused on removing some of the slush and snow from the roads, and then also a lot on traction control.”

He added that living in southern Alberta these conditions are common and that all drivers should continue to pay attention to the road conditions and drive with care throughout the winter.

Medicine Hat is expected to see more low temperatures and snow in the upcoming week making that advice from Funk all that more important.
