The South Zone has the highest rate of new COVID-19 cases in the province and Alberta continues to see a growing number of inpatients in hospitals.

The province reported Wednesday that 1,118 Albertans are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, and 28 of those people are in ICU. Last week those numbers were 1,070 and 33.

There were 1,461 new cases in Alberta over the past seven days, up from 1,387 the previous period and 28 deaths, up from 32.

The province’s COVID-19 dashboard is now showing only zone statistics instead of by municipality. There were 137 new cases in the South Zone in the past seven days, up from 107 in the previous period.

The seven-day new case rate in the zone of 44 new cases per 100,000 people is well above the provincial average of 33.1.

There have been 40,034 total COVID-19 cases in the zone since the start of the pandemic, and 454 deaths.

Vaccination statistics for Medicine Hat show 79.2 per cent of all people have received one dose, 75.7 per cent have received two doses and 37.5 per cent have received three doses.
