HIGH PRAIRIE, AB – RCMP have arrested a suspect following the death of an infant in northern Alberta.

On Oct. 6, High Prairie RCMP was informed by High Prairie Hospital of a child’s sudden death at a residence in the community. An autopsy report determined that the child’s death was the result of a homicide.

Nine days later, Kyra Renee Backs, 29, of High Prairie, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

A news release from RCMP states that “Kyra Backs ran a day home in High Prairie at the time of the offence.”

She was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in High Prairie Provincial Court later this month.

Officers are looking to speak to families who had sent their children to the day home, currently or in the past. They are asked to call High Prairie RCMP at 780-523-3378 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.

As this matter is now before the courts, RCMP will not be providing any further information.
