Over the Thanksgiving long weekend, RCMP detachments across Canada led an important traffic initiative.

The project known as #OperationImpact2022 is led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and was created to encourage safe driving behaviours. From Oct. 7-10, Alberta RCMP issued 2,653 tickets in support of the campaign and traffic safety enforcement.

The RCMP says there were zero fatalities as a result of motor vehicle collisions across Alberta RCMP jurisdictions. Overall, police say 21 motor vehicle collisions resulted in injuries over the long weekend.

Alberta RCMP members patrolled provincial highways and roadways, and issued 1,328 speeding charges, 18 excessive speeding charges (more than 50 km/h over the posted limit), 58 driving without a seatbelt charges, and 65 distracted driving charges. Police note that 88 impaired drivers were removed from Alberta roadways.

Additionally, the RCMP says it received 40 calls from the public reporting dangerous or suspected impaired driving. Of those reports, 11 resulted in officers locating the vehicles, confirming that the drivers were in fact impaired, and removing them from the road.
