Food for Fines helps readers and the Root Cellar

Oct 9, 2022 | 10:10 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Are overdue fines keeping you from finding a spooky book to get into the Halloween spirit? The Medicine Hat Public Library has a program to get you back to books and helping feed some of our most vulnerable community members.

Every Thursday is Food for Fines day. For every non-perishable food item you bring in you get $1 in fines waived, up to a maximum of $20.

The food items will be given to the Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub. The most needed items are canned vegetables, meat, and soup, cereal, dry pasta and sauce, peanut butter, jam and rice.

As well, the free library card program is continuing at the library, thanks to sponsorships from community businesses and organizations.
