New interim chief for Medicine Hat police

MEDICINE HAT, AB – There is a new interim police chief that will oversee the Medicine Hat Police Service as a permanent replacement is found for Mike Worden.

The Medicine Hat Police Commission announced Thursday afternoon the appointment of Alan Murphy as interim chief.

Murphy has been serving as the deputy police chief in Edmonton.

The police commission says as it moves into the final stages of the recruitment process for a new chief of police, it was decided that an external appointment for the interim position would be beneficial. This is to avoid any concerns surrounding a potential conflict of interest with an internal applicant.

The commission is extending its gratitude to Insp. Joe West, who has been filling this role since late May.

Murphy’s appointment is effective Oct. 12. Applications for the chief of police posting close on Oct. 7.

Worden resigned as police chief in May. He was having a consensual sexual relationship with someone outside the police service, which led to allegations of non-workplace misconduct that were brought to the Medicine Hat Police Commission.

The investigation cleared Worden of any wrongdoing. He decided to step down, citing personal and family reasons.
