Province doles out first investment from rural growth fund

Oct 4, 2022 | 4:26 PM

A family-run business in Lethbridge is the first company to receive funding through a new rural stream of the provincial Investment and Growth Fund.

Working with Invest Alberta Corporation, the government awarded $2.06 million from the rural stream of the Investment and Growth Fund to support the Southland Trailer Corp.’s expansion, to double its production and create 250 jobs.

Tanya Fir, minister of jobs, economy and innovation, says the fund is one more tool the province has to attract investment and jobs and a signal to investors that the province is “serious and laser focused about growing our economy and working with businesses to make that happen.”

The province first introduced the $10-million fund in 2021 and expanded it in this year’s budget by adding $5 million dedicated to rural economic development.
