Second fire at The Royal

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Crews were called to the scene of The Royal at 5:40 a.m. Oct. 2 when there was a reported visible fire.

All three stations were deployed to launch a defensive attack on the fire, and as of now it has been extinguished. Crews were still on scene searching for possible hot spots about seven hours later.

Deputy Chief Chad Eakins says the cause of the fire this morning is still being investigated. As well that a flare-up is an unlikely cause due to the time since the original incident.

When asked about how the original fire on Sept. 16 was started Eakins said there was as well not yet an official cause, but “there has been some work done since the original fire with the insurance company on the investigation end of it. As well the upcoming demolition of that building.”

Eakins as well wanted to relay to the community “make sure you are keeping the pathways clear for our trucks, and our crews to be able to come in and do the work. We understand everyone wants to come and take a look, but we have the barriers in place to make sure the residents stay safe.”
