Lethbridge police officer receives Medal of Bravery

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It is the first time in the 120-year history of the Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) that one of its officers has been bestowed with the Medal of Bravery.

Gov. Gen. Mary Simon presented the medal to Const. Marco Pagliericci at a recent ceremony in Ottawa.

The Medal of Bravery honours individuals who have risked their lives to try to save someone in imminent danger.

On April 8, 2017, Pagliericci rescued several residents from a fire in the Bridge Villa Estates Trailer Park in Lethbridge.

According to a media release from LPS, the officer found a home engulfed in flames as the fire was also spreading to a neighbouring unit.

“He banged on the door and directed an elderly woman to leave, then entered the home and found an elderly man with a disability lying on the couch. He led the man outside as flames and thick smoke engulfed the unit,” reads part of a release from LPS. “The constable then turned his attention to evacuating other tenants from the neighbouring homes and keeping the site secure until firefighters arrived.”

Pagliericci has been a member of LPS since 2001 and was part of the Canadian Armed Forces from 1978 to 2000, working in artillery and air defence.

He has previously been awarded the Gulf and Kuwait Medal, the Canadian Keeper Medal, The NATO/OTAN Medal, the United Nations Cyprus Medal and the Canadian Forces Decoration with the 22-year bar.
