MEDICINE HAT, AB – Women supporting women is at the core of the Medicine Hat Women in Business group.

The group is holding its first expo this Saturday, where they will highlight local businesses that are women-oriented, women-owned and women-led.

Alyssia DeWolfe, co-owner of Back Alley Fitness and Karate-Do Academy, says women supporting other women in business helps all of them thrive.

“We don’t necessarily always get as much exposure and it is important that women who own businesses are thriving because we really do set trends in the marketplace, we sent trends as consumers,” she says. “And so women-led business, or even just women consumers who are looking to support women-led businesses, have such a huge economic impact. So by highlighting that in our community and giving those people the platform to be able to see what they have to offer, I think it just drives our, it drives our economic community locally as well.”

The expo will bring together about 70 vendors from businesses that are at least 50 per cent women-led. Industries like construction and landscaping, arts and crafts, counselling, fitness and catering will be represented

Organizers of the expo describe it as a trade show-meets-market vendor event, one that will give everyone a platform to show off what they are offering the community.

Medicine Hat Women in Business has been around for a little more than a decade, hosting an Inspire Award gala and wine and cheese networking events. DeWolfe says the expo is an attempt to try something fresh with a new perspective and include a wider range of businesses and industries.

She says the group is blown away by the response to the expo from vendors and the public.

“I think that really shows us that the community was looking for something like this and that obviously we have the vendors and we have the businesses that are going to make it really successful,” she says.

Everyone is welcome and entry is free for the Saturday expo, which takes place at the Stampede auditorium from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
