Classes as usual at area schools

City to observe holiday for Queen’s funeral

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The City of Medicine Hat will follow the lead of the federal government and observe a holiday on Monday, Sept. 19, a national day of mourning to coincide with the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

The regular Medicine Hat City Council meeting scheduled for Monday evening is cancelled. The next council meeting will take place on Oct. 3. City Hall will be closed to the public on Sept. 19.

Parks and recreation facilities will be closed with the exception of Big Marble Go Centre, which will be open with holiday hours of noon to 5 p.m. The city says previously scheduled bookings will be contacted and worked within those hours as requested and available. Co-op Place and Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre will be closed to the public.

Fire services dispatch and suppression services will operate as normal but will not be open for public enquiries or prevention services. Medicine Hat Police Service will have regular patrol services in place but the front lobby will be closed to the public.

Transit service will run as normal, and solid waste collection and landfill operations will continue as normal, but offices will be closed to public.

City operations will return to normal with regular business hours on Sept. 20.

Medicine Hat Public School Division says its schools will be open, and classes will proceed as usual on Sept. 19. A moment of silence will be observed across the system at 10 a.m. and schools and individual teachers are welcome to engage in other age-appropriate acts of commemoration of Queen Elizabeth II’s life and reign.

Schools in the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education will also be open as usual and offer opportunities for students to take part in the day of mourning. Schools will be asked to participate in a moment of silence at 10 a.m. followed by a prayer.

Schools in the Prairie Rose Public Schools division will also be open and classes will proceed as usual.
