B.C. wildfire smoke drifting all the way to Medicine Hat

Sep 12, 2022 | 2:14 PM

Wildfire smoke from British Columbia continues to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility in southern and western Alberta.

Environment Canada has issued an air quality statement for an area stretching from Jasper National Park to Medicine Hat.

It says children, seniors and those with cardiovascular or lung diseases are especially at risk. They will generally experience more serious health effects at lower levels. Pollution can aggravate their diseases, leading to increased medication use, doctor and emergency room visits, and hospital visits.

If you or those in your care are exposed to wildfire smoke, consider taking extra precautions to reduce your exposure. Wildfire smoke is a constantly-changing mixture of particles and gases which includes many chemicals that can harm your health. Click here for more details.

The fires in B.C. include one near the community of Hope, which has closed a stretch of the eastbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway.
