Gas line replacement underway in Norwood neighbourhood

Sep 6, 2022 | 1:03 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Work began today on a project to replace low pressure natural gas lines in the Norwood area of southeastern Medicine Hat.

The project will mean the closure of a small portion of Southview Drive between Dunmore Road and 13th Avenue SE as crews need to access the main gas feeder line.

The bulk of the work however will involve excavation in streets and back lanes in the area of 29th Street and Lamb Court SE.

Blake Buye, engineering gas technologist with the City of Medicine Hat gas distribution department, says it will involve a temporary interruption in natural gas service as crews complete the work.

“Once we tie them over from the old low pressure to the new medium pressure, usually within the day when we get people hooked back up and on the new system,” says Buye.

Gas techs and plumbers will be going into people’s backyards surveying what needs to be done.

Buye says they will knock on the door and let residents know they need to go inside to relight appliances, or they will leave a note on the door for a callback at the resident’s convenience.

Access to businesses along Southview Drive will be maintained.
Motorists are asked to obey all posted signs and detours in the construction area.

The closure is expected to last four to six weeks.
