Weapons and drugs seized by ALERT unit from home in southwest Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Members of the ALERT unit seized a variety of weapons, including a rifle, from the home of a suspected drug dealer in Medicine Hat.

They searched a home on the Southwest Hill and uncovered a rifle with ammunition, a crossbow, taser, dart launcher and quantities of fentanyl and methamphetamine.

They also seized $6,350 in cash.

Investigators were concerned because the home is close to a junior high school.

“Clearly there were a variety of dangerous weapons seized during this investigation and what’s most concerning is the home’s proximity to a junior high school. Anytime drugs and weapons mix it poses a threat to public safety and community well-being,” said Staff Sgt. Ryan Thorburn, ALERT Medicine Hat.

James McNulty, 41 years of age, has been charged with possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, careless use of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of proceeds of crime, and unauthorized possession of identity documents.

McNulty was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 29.
