MEDICINE HAT, AB – Customers who have signed up for the fixed-rate option are continuing to benefit from substantial utility rate savings.

This month, fixed-rate customers are paying about 40 per cent less for natural gas and 50 per cent less for electricity than those on the floating rate. The City of Medicine Hat released its September utility rates today.

The floating natural gas rate is set at $7.212 per gigajoule this month, up from the August rate of $6.680. September’s rate is between the $8.278 set by Apex (formerly AltaGas) and the $6.146 set by Direct Energy.

The fixed rate for 2022 is $4.35 per GJ, as of Jan. 1.

Electricity customers on the floating rate will pay 15.785 cents per kilowatt-hour this month, down from 17.174 cents per kilowatt-hour in August.

This month’s electricity price falls between the high of 16.202 cents set by Epcor (Edmonton) and the low of 15.259 cents set by Direct Energy.

The city’s fixed rate is 8 cents per kilowatt-hour for 2022.

The city says more and more customers have registered for the fixed rate in recent months. For July, the floating rate was more than double the fixed rate for both power and gas.
