Emergency department in Bassano closed for Labour Day long weekend

Sep 1, 2022 | 4:29 PM

BASSANO, AB – The emergency department at the Bassano Health Centre will be closed this weekend due to lack of physician coverage.

Alberta Health Services says the town will be without emergency services from 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2 to 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Bassano is about 150 km west of Medicine Hat on Highway 1.

The lack of physician availability also requires extending the temporary consolidation of Bassano Health Centre’s four acute care beds to the Brooks Health Centre about 50 km away, AHS says.

As of Sept. 7, the department’s current hours of weekday coverage and weekend coverage will be extended until Oct. 31. During this period, the department will remain open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and open for the entire weekend, including overnight.

Those hours first came into effect on June 1, also due to lack of physician coverage.

Patients are asked to call 911 if they have a medical emergency.

AHS says EMS calls will be re-routed to Brooks, to ensure local residents continue to have access to the emergency services they need. Patients seeking care can access emergency services at the Brooks Health Centre.

Residents are reminded to call Health Link at 811, which is available 24/7, for non-emergency health-related questions. Individuals requiring non-emergency medical care are also encouraged to call their family physician.
