Cycle Guild gives Hatters their own ride

MEDICINE HAT, AB – After two years of temporary spaces downtown and at Safety City the Cycle Guild of Medicine Hat has a space to call its own.

The grand opening took place today at the new shop at 447 Allowance Avenue in the River Flats.

The guild takes donations of old or beat-up bicycles, fixes them up to be safe and road worthy and then gives them to people who typically can’t afford to buy a bicycle. The guild has a long list of customers.

“Saamis Immigration is one of our customers, also we give to the immigrant workers, a lot of the bikes go to children so we try to encourage them to take up a green hobby that could positively impact their lives,” says president Baz Clarke. “Also a lot of bikes go to adults who don’t have a means of transport so in the summer they can use those. A lot of the people who’ve immigrated don’t have cars yet and a lot of the temporary workers don’t have cars.”

The guild relies on a small group of volunteers to do the work and donations from the community to buy the necessary parts and tools for repairs. It costs about $20 for each bicycle repair.

Clarke says that since its founding in 2020 the cycle guild has fixed, shined up and donated close to 400 bicycles. That’s also 400 bicycles that have been kept out of the landfill, Clarke notes.

He says adults and children are always happy to receive their new ride.

“When you see the smiles on the children’s faces it’s fantastic and the adults as well,” Clarke says.
