MEDICINE HAT, AB – The cost of natural gas is down this month for City of Medicine Hat utility customers on the monthly floating rate, while the cost of electricity is going the other way.

Natural gas will cost those on the floating rate $6.68 per gigajoule this month, down from the July rate of $9.094. August’s rate is between the $7.562 set by Apex (formerly AltaGas) and the $5.797 set by Direct Energy.

The fixed rate for 2022 is $4.35 per GJ, as of Jan. 1.

Electricity customers on the floating rate will pay 17.174 cents per kilowatt-hour this month, up from 14.795 cents per kilowatt-hour in July.

This month’s electricity price falls between the high of 17.345 cents set by Epcor (Edmonton) and the low of 16.879 cents set by Direct Energy.

The city’s fixed rate is 8 cents per kilowatt-hour for 2022.

The city says more and more customers have registered for the fixed rate in recent months. For July, the floating rate was more than double the fixed rate for both power and gas.
