Alberta heat warnings stretch from Cypress Hills to Peace River

Jul 27, 2022 | 4:16 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Hatters will want to stay hydrated and find shade often for the rest of the week, particularly if you’re on the Stampede grounds.

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for not only our area but the majority of the province.

The warning for Medicine Hat-Bow Island-Suffield came out just after 3:30 p.m. Daytime high temperatures ranging from near 29 C to 35 C combined with overnight lows from the mid-to high-teens are expected into early next week.

Environment Canada advises people to take the following precautions:

  • Consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day
  • Take frequent breaks from the heat, spending time in cooled indoor spaces where possible
  • Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated
  • Check for your children or pets before you exit your vehicle. Do not leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle, for any length of time

People should also monitor for symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion, such as high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, fainting, and unconsciousness.

Particular attention should be paid to individuals that can experience earlier or more severe effects from heat including infants, children, seniors, as well as individuals with pre-existing lung, heart, kidney, nervous system, mental health or diabetic conditions, outdoor workers, as well as those who are socially isolated.

Environment Canada issues heat warnings when very high-temperature conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
