Final day to pay property taxes without penalty

Jun 30, 2022 | 9:36 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Today is the final day to pay your Medicine Hat property taxes or apply for a payment plan to avoid a late penalty.

Any amounts unpaid as of July 1 will incur an immediate penalty of seven per cent and one per cent monthly thereafter.

In April city council voted unanimously to increase city property taxes for the first time in three years, ending a three-year pandemic-related rate freeze.

At the time, Lola Barta, acting corporate services manager for the city, said the average single-family household can expect an increase of four per cent, which equates to $107 per year on average.

Property tax revenue is split three ways, with the City of Medicine Hat estimated to receive about $80.7 million to fund city operations and services such as parks and recreation, fire and emergency services and general city government.

Property tax payments also include the provincial education tax, for which the province receives $25.7 million. The Cypress View Foundation Levy amounts to just under $1 million.
