The NDP has named its candidate for Brooks-Medicine Hat in next year’s provincial election.

“I am so pleased to announce that retired teacher and volunteer English language educator @gwendoline_dirk will be the NDP candidate for Brooks-Medicine Hat in the next Alberta provincial election!,” NDP Leader Rachel Notley tweeted on Thursday evening.

Dirk is a retired Medicine Hat College instructor and has been involved as a volunteer with the local NDP executive.

She told CHAT News last month that people’s concerns about the direction of the province has seen more people becoming involved with the party.

Dirk joins Alberta Party Leader and former mayor of Brooks Barry Morishita as confirmed candidates in the riding. Brooks-Medicine Hat is currently represented by the United Conservative Party’s Michaela Frey.

No candidates are confirmed for Cypress-Medicine Hat, the seat currently held by Independent Drew Barnes.

The provincial election is scheduled for May 2023
