Amplify Medicine Hat – Safety Buzz Campus

Jun 20, 2022 | 11:51 AM

Local business is the cornerstone of Medicine Hat, that’s why we’re asking you to Amplify Medicine Hat by nominating local businesses we can highlight and support.

Amy Zuk-Olsen started Safety Buzz in 2004 in Bonnyville, Alberta – an area she says is mostly oilfield and agriculture.

“I was working with my dad, and he said ‘You know, go out and work. Don’t stay with the farm, you should get out and work.”

With her father’s encouragement, Amy got into the oilfield industry and from there took safety courses, realizing she really enjoyed the safety aspect and that it was something she was passionate about. Amy had a goal to change the perspective on safety and highlight that it goes beyond the workplace.

She began the company as a lone operator at 23 and grew the company from there. Over time through expansion, Amy and Sheldon moved to Medicine Hat and started a branch here. The business started out on 30th Street in Medicine Hat. Eventually, they needed a bigger space to accommodate the courses and training they offered to really benefit clients and cultivate the comfortable and inviting campus environment they now have in Dunmore.

In the last 5 years (6 in in August!) Amy has worked to make the Safety Buzz Campus and classrooms a comfortable space to be in. From the lighting to the patio and having popcorn available to staff and clients, it has become a place people want to be. With large classrooms, Safety Buzz Campus was able to continue serving the community and social distance to keep courses going and continue to help people build their skills and resumes.

In addition to providing training and courses, Safety Buzz also fills the gaps for companies where safety is a concern. Amy describes it more as a “safety mentorship” than management. She and her team work with companies to identify their needs or areas of concern and act as that safety representative.

“People come to us as the training experts,” Amy explains. “It’s much more cost effective and convenient to bring your team to a training company than to find someone internally to train to be a trainer.”

Within the last year, Safety Buzz Campus has added Truck Driver Training to their list of courses. They are also looking to encourage more women to get into truck driving and have a female instructor on staff with great insight into operating vehicles. Safety Buzz Campus wants to highlight the value of women in this industry and help them realize the potential and opportunities.

Nominators were not short for words when explaining why Safety Buzz Campus deserved some attention:

“Safety Buzz Campus is always looking for new opportunities to provide safety to the community. They have a great team and there campus is big and comfortable. In these days that space is even more important. They have ample parking space and are really easy to find. It’s a whole safety experience training at Safety Buzz Campus.”

“Safety Buzz Campus is always elevating safety through training, monthly safety management options, air trailer services and more. When they see a safety gap, they fill it. Safety Buzz Campus truly cares for our community and amplifies what it stands for by giving back through fundraisers, donating and representing at events.”

Thanks for your nominations, and thanks Safety Buzz for helping us Amplify Medicine Hat.
