UPDATE 11:15 a.m.: Alberta Environment says the South Saskatchewan River in Medicine Hat is peaking.

But it remains under a high stream flow advisory.

The forecasters say the river has risen 2.2 metres since Wednesday, but the peak is expected to arrive in Medicine Hat later today.

The situation is the same for the Oldman River downstream from the dam to where it meets with the Bow River to form the South Saskatchewan.

The Bow River in Calgary has peaked, but river forecasters expect current levels will remain for several days before dropping.

MEDICINE HAT — With even just a passing glance, it’s easy to see the level of the South Saskatchewan River has come up substantially in the last two days.

But the last report from the City of Medicine Hat was that the river was expected to peak today.

That’s already been happening on the rivers that feed into the South Saskatchewan from the west, and areas upstream have not had any major flooding.

At 6 a.m. Friday, the flow rate was 1,052 cubic metres per second, well below a threshold set by the city before taking further precautions.

But out of an abundance of caution the city said it will be closing boat launches and any low-lying trails, and asked people to stay off the river for the time being.

It remains under a high stream flow advisory
