The City of Medicine Hat conducted a flood protection training session Wednesday near Parkview Drive and Altawana Drive NE.

About 10 city staff members took part.

The training exercise involved installation of a specialized flood wall and wasn’t related to any perceived or impending threat.

Jeremy Petryshyn with the city said staff go through routine training every year to ensure they know how to protect homes should flooding occur.

“So this one here is a demountable barrier, and so this one here is a structure where we put the pieces in place, and they will cover it with poly and sandbags, and that will stop the flood waters from entering these neighbourhoods.” he said.

The barrier takes about 10 hours total to install, he said.
