Medicine Hat police chief’s resignation related to a sexual relationship outside the service

May 25, 2022 | 12:16 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – CHAT News has learned new details surrounding the sudden resignation of Medicine Hat Police Chief Mike Worden.

The chief’s departure centres around a consensual sexual relationship with someone outside the police service.

The relationship led to allegations of non-workplace misconduct that were brought to the Medicine Hat Police Commission.

The commission hired a law firm which then hired an independent investigator to look into the allegations.

The investigation cleared Worden of any wrongdoing. The findings from the investigator have not been made public.

While this was a personal relationship outside the workplace, Worden did inform the police service on Friday of his intention to step down, citing personal and family reasons.

Worden declined a request from CHAT News for an interview but said he has accepted a position in Calgary.

When pressed about the reason behind Worden’s sudden departure police commission chair Ted Rodych reiterated on Tuesday that it was due to “personal reasons.”

CHAT News was scheduled to speak with Mayor Linnsie Clark about Worden’s resignation Wednesday afternoon but that interview has been cancelled.
