Online renewals make life easier for Albertans

The Alberta government announced on May 16, 2022 that Albertans looking to renew their drivers licences and identification cards can do so online starting May 17, 2022. Albertans can access these services through the MyAlberta eServices portal.

Minister of Service Alberta Nate Glubish says renewing a drivers licence or ID card is one of the most requested services registry offices perform.

“This is a service that affects nearly every Albertan,” said Glubish. “In fact, last year, almost 550,000 Albertans renewed their driver’s licenses and over 27,000 Albertans renewed their ID cards.”

In order to renew online, Albertans will need to login with a verified account and meet the following eligibility criteria:

• Be 18 to 75 years old to renew a driver’s licence or at least 18 years old to renew an ID card.
• Be a resident of Alberta.
• Have a driver’s licence that is not suspended.
• Not require changes to demographic information, such as address, height or sex.
• Have a card that has not been expired for more than six months.
• Not require a medical examination report to renew their driver’s licence.
• Have a photo and signature on the card that are less than 10 years old.

Another change that comes with this announcement is the ability for Albertans to keep their old ID while they wait for the new ID to arrive in the mail. However Albertans will be able to download a temporary licence from MyAlberta eServices after the online renewal has been processed.

A temporary licence could be required if the Albertan’s licence is set to expire before their new card arrives in the mail. Once Albertans receive their new ID in the mail they must destroy the old one.

Industry partners are pleased with new changes. Association of Alberta Registry Agents CEO Rikki McBride says this is a step in the right direction.

“As more services are offered online, this change is a great step forward towards the modernization that Albertans are coming to expect,” McBride said. “We’ve been pleased with the consultation by this government and Minister Glubish, and look forward to working in partnership as we continue to offer convenient and accessible channels for Albertans to access registry services.”

Other services Albertans can perform online include:

• Birth registrations and birth certificate ordering.
• one-year registration renewals for passenger vehicles, motorcycles, off-highway vehicles and some farm vehicles.
• Duplicate vehicle registration certificates
• In-transit permits.
• Specialty licence plate orders.
• Driver’s abstracts
• Vehicle information reports

Albertans will still have access to in-person registry services and can choose whichever individual service provider suits their preference.
