MEDICINE HAT, AB – After two years of cancelled shows, students graduating from St. Mary’s School this year are finally getting their time to shine.

With only three years at the school, it’s a small window for the fine arts students to stage a big production.

“A lot of the Grade 8s and 9s have never been like performing or on a stage before so this is super exciting for them. My Grade 7s are super excited to be on stage in front of a live audience,” says stage manager and fine arts teacher Sarah Kerr.

“And it’s just nice as fine arts kids we actually get to show off their singing their dancing, their choreography and everything so they’re super excited to be back, little nervous but I think those we’ll go away once they’ve performed.”

This week the school presents “Matilda Jr. The Musical,” which Kerr says is the story of a girl who is trying to belong in a place where she feels she doesn’t and makes everyone feel like they can be who they are and express who they are.

There are about 30 student cast members and another handful backstage, including members of the school’s cosmetology program doing hair and makeup.

Kerr says the teachers are proud of how hard the students have worked and that the kids have maintained their energy since starting in September.

“They’re super excited, super on it and seeing it transfer from the drama room onto a stage has made us super happy as their teachers,” she says.

The show opened with a matinee Thursday and continues with another Thursday and shows Friday afternoon and evening.
