Amplify Medicine Hat – Sugar Daddy Cheesecakes

Sugar Daddy Cheesecakes was started by Bill Woolmer just over a year ago, but he’s been creating cheesecakes for much longer. What is now a business started out as a way for Bill to relax after his previous full-time job. “For me, baking cheesecakes when I got home from work was therapeutic.”

He started making cheesecakes at home and gave away the ones he made. On Thursdays, he started giving out slices. It was not until someone offered a tip for a slice that it grew from there. People began asking if he could make cakes for birthdays and things evolved naturally.

As far as cheesecake flavours go, the process is a bit of a collaboration between Bill and customers. Several of his flavours (dill pickle, bourbon pecan, maple bacon) are his own recipe but others, such as the confetti cheesecake, started out as a customer request. If you come into the shop and do not see what you’re looking for on the menu – hard to imagine when there are over 70 cakes that they make – you can request the flavour. Bill is open to trying new things, though he admits certain things do not always work out.

Bill says that he cannot take credit for the name “Sugar Daddy Cheesecakes.” It came from two people he worked with previously thought the name was hilarious, and he ran with it.

Sugar Daddy Cheesecakes was nominated for being what the nominator describes as a community leader. “He is not scared to lead others to success as he knows that every connection made helps the business community become stronger. He truly cares about making a difference in the business community.”

Bill is honored when non-profit groups reach out to him because 1) this means they’ve heard about his business and 2) he believes that no matter how large or small a donation is, it helps.

“I pretty much don’t turn anybody away because these are all the people our community.” Over the last year, he’s worked with Canadian Mental Health, hockey teams, dance groups and many more organizations. He says he’s honestly flattered when people approach him.

When choosing a location, Downtown Medicine Hat was an obvious choice for Bill.

“I grew up in a town where downtown was busy,” he says, “And I believe that if I offered something unique people would come downtown, and people have proven me right.” There are a myriad of initiatives happening in the Downtown area to bring life back to that part of the city, and Bill wants to be a part of making Downtown what it used to be. This is why he is such a huge promoter of Wicked Wednesdays, a food truck festival located Downtown.

Sugar Daddy Cheesecakes is located on 3^rd Street in Downtown Medicine Hat. They are strictly a cheesecake shop. “We do one thing, we do it well and that’s it.” Stop in for a slice!
