Alberta government changing the way insulin pumps are covered

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Alberta Government has announced the final stage of its three-phase plan to improve diabetes care.

Starting on August 1, 2022, insulin pump benefits will be transferred from the Insulin Pump Therapy Program (IPTP) to government-sponsored health benefit plans. At that time, the IPTP will be discontinued.

Those who are currently receiving benefits through the IPTP who do not have employer-sponsored or private insurance coverage will need to obtain coverage through a government-sponsored health plan.

Depending on the health plan benefit, a co-payment or monthly premium and co-payment may be required. Low-income Albertans will continue to receive these benefits at no cost.

As part of the transition, Premier Jason Kenney says Albertans living with insulin will get access to newer, more advanced models of insulin pumps.

“Alberta’s government recognizes that Albertans living with diabetes want access to the most innovative equipment available. Having access to the most recent technology will better support them and help them to more effectively manage their condition.”

Phase one of the government’s plan, implemented in August 2021, expanded coverage for diabetes test strips and other diabetes supplies.

In February 2022, youths in Alberta living with diabetes received coverage for continuous glucose monitors.

Approximately 386,000 Albertans are living with diabetes, which is expected to increase to more than 550,000 by 2031. Currently, about 4,000 Albertans receive insulin pumps, equipment, and supplies at no cost through the IPTP.
