MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Canadian Mental Health Association hopes Medicine Hat will be chock-full of positive feelings this weekend.

The CMHA Alberta Southeast Region is inviting people out for Paint the City Positive this Saturday, hoping to make a big impact with small actions.

“We’ll be all over town drawing chalk art, writing uplifting messages just to spread some positivity around the community,” says Shelby MacPhail, KIT program and events and marketing coordinator.

Free chalk bags are available this week at 10 chalk stops: Big Brothers Big Sisters, Big Marble Go Centre Medicine Hat Public Library, McMan Youth, Family and Community Services Association, Nutters Everyday Naturals, Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub, Sugar Daddy Cheesecakes, The Post, Tourism Medicine Hat and the Veiner Centre.

MacPhail says there’s almost no end to where you can chalk, suggesting sidewalks downtown or in your neighbourhood and on the city’s trail system

She also says Kin Coulee Park could use some chalk before the Move for Mental Health Fun Walk and Run on Sunday.

She says being outdoors is a good first step to boosting your mental health

“Just even getting outside and being able to engage with the community, just getting some fresh air and yeah being able to walk down the street and see an uplifting message, you never know it, could change someone’s day and turn it right around,” she says. “So we’re just hoping to kind of do something small to make a big impact in our community.”

CMHA’s 71st annual Mental Health Week is May 2-8 and MacPhail says community events will happen throughout the week including the kick-off to Ride Don’t Hide.
