More fake money may be circulating following bust: Medicine Hat police

MEDICINE HAT — Medicine Hat police say more fake money may still be circulating in the city, following the bust of counterfeit currency operation this week.

During a search of a southeast Medicine Hat home Tuesday, police discovered a scanner and a small amount of counterfeit cash.

Police say it’s believed the illegal operation was in the early stages of starting up, but some fake bills worth less than a thousand dollars may have not yet been found in Medicine Hat.

A $50 bill and a $100 bill were passed to local retailers last weekend.

Police call the fake bills “low quality,” and say there are ways to pick the fake bills out from the real ones.

“There’s various security features, such as holograms. Even the feel of the paper. Does it feel like a photocopy or does it feel like a banknote. That’s the first test,” said Sgt. Darren Lole, team leader of the Regional Property Crimes Unit.

“And then there’s the colours. Does it look off. Is it a weird colour. Is it a crisp printed note or is it fuzzy around the edges.”

Two people from Medicine Hat are facing charges in the counterfeit case.
