MEDICINE HAT, AB – If you’ve been to Police Point Park in the past few months you may have noticed there’s a new chief interpreter.

Alicia Lew joined the program in January 2020 as a park interpreter and became chief interpreter in October.

Lew adds she wants herself and the new park interpreters to bring a lot of excitement and new energy to the park.

“We want to try to encourage the community to come in and enjoy not just the nature centre but down here, the park, and so having kind of new faces down here sometimes that can be welcoming and a different experience for them each time,” she says.

She also wants people to feel like they can be involved in the programs and connect with the community, to “inspire people from southeastern Alberta and abroad to appreciate the amazing things that we have down here both related to nature and natural history.”

Lew took over the role of chief interpreter after the retirement of Corlaine Gardner, who held the role for 15 years, and has had excellent support from Grasslands Naturalists who oversee the interpretive program.

She says she has big shoes to fill trying to re-establish connections Gardner made and build new ones.

Lew says to watch Police Point Park’s social media channels or contact the nature centre to learn more about upcoming programs like Painting in the Park and Beginner Bird Watching. You can also find information at natureline.info.
