CALGARY, AB – It’s rare when all the pieces come together for a team, but when they do usually magic follows.

That’s the case for the South Alberta Hockey Academy U18 boys prep team, who captured the Mac’s Invitational Tournament championship on Sunday in arguably the biggest moment in the program’s history.

Medicine Hat Tigers prospect Shane Smith had two goals for SAHA, as the upstart academy took out the Vancouver NE Chiefs 4-2 to capture the ‘A’ division trophy in their first Mac’s Tournament.

Smith and Winnipeg ICE prospect Aiden Oiring tallied goals in the first period, before Smith found the scoresheet again in the second to stake SAHA to a 3-0 lead.

Vancouver was able to answer back with a pair of goals in the third to get within one, but Elijah Anderson made no mistake on an empty-netter to secure the gold medal for SAHA.

For his work, Smith was named Playoff MVP by the tournament committee.

The Mac’s Invitational Tournament was played this weekend due to the original tournament set for late December being postponed due to COVID-19.
