Kale Porteous Memorial Splash Park to open this summer

BOW ISLAND, AB – Bow Island residents will have a new splash park to play in this summer.

Construction will begin this spring on the Kale Porteous Memorial Splash Park, with the hope the park is ready for Bow Island Days in the middle of July.

Kale was 11 years old when he died in a farming accident in 2018.

Bow Island Mayor Gordon Reynolds says the splash park is a fitting tribute to Kale.

“It has two themes, two things that were important to Kale in his life and that’s hockey and agriculture,” Reynolds says. “We’ve got a mixture of design within the park, the two distinct themes and it’s going to be a good size and I think a lot of fun once it’s done. “

Kale’s family ranches north of Bow Island and has been active in the community for generations.

Reynolds says the idea of doing a project in Kale’s honour came from the Troy Loney Charity Golf Committee. Loney is from Bow Island and went on to a 12-year NHL career. The golf tournament is in its ninth year and the proceeds from it are donated to community projects.
